Separation Studies
The performance of separation equipment in a process plant can be studied using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) programmes such as CFX and Fluent. EPD can evaluate the effects of changes in configuration or flow regime on the performance of a variety of separator units. Typical studies include motion effects in separators, the benefits/problems of various internals, and liquid carryover in gas streams.

Flow Assurance
Pipeline flow problems such as hydrates, wax, scale, asphaltenes, surge and pigging operations are all issues that can be simulated by EPD, either at the front end of a project, or for an existing facility. Detailed pipeline schemes are modelled using the industry standard OLGA 2000 flow assurance software, together with PVTsim for fluid characterisation.

Dynamic Simulation
Dynamic modelling is a valuable tool for evaluation of plant operating conditions and control logic. Flow parameter changes, feed composition changes and anticipated disturbances can all be simulated to check the robustness of a process design. EPD use HYSYS.Plant simulation software to model dynamic systems such as:
  • Compressor control loops
  • Slugging pipeline flow
  • Overall process control system design and optimisation
